Gaming Hardware: Alienware changing for the better or worse
Los Angeles (CA) - Alienware traditionally has been a niche computer manufacturer, catering their distinctive computers with glowing alien heads to people with deep pockets. Fully configured, many of these machines can cost several thousands of dollars, but the company is starting to focus on lower budget consumers such as college students and government employees. At DV Expo West, we chatted with Linda Roberds, product marketing manager, at Alienware and Kashef Mahmud, director of federal sales, about the future direction of the company.

Gaming Hardware: PCI-E 2 Coming to a Computer Near You!
WHILE A LOT of people haven't got themselves fangled up for PCI Express yet, and AGP cards are still selling well, Intel told developers last week to be ready for PCI Express 2.
Ajay Bhatt and Ramin Neshati, who work at the Intel Corporation, divulged architectural extensions for PCIe II, with products expected in 2007-2008.

Features for PCI Express II include better formance at 5GHz PHY, device virtualisation, trusted platforms, and different sizes - or form factors as the jargon goes.

Gaming Hardware: ATI Quietly Releases X800 GT
News of the part emerged last month, and today at least one Taiwanese board maker finally launched products based on the new chip.

A visit to ATI's web site reveals a reference to the X800 GT, but only among products which its hardware partners will ship. ATI, it seems, will not be offering X800 GT-based boards of its own.

The X800 GT is believed to derive from ATI's R480 core. It contains eight pixel processing pipelines and six vertex engines, and is clocked to around 470MHz. It only supports PCI Express x16 connections - there's no AGP 8x version.

Gaming Hardware: Nvidia Says
The 6800 Ultra remains Nvidia fastest AGP.

Nvidia is doing the AGP to PCIe move faster than we expected, as it decided that it won't release the Geforce 7800 series in an old fashioned AGP way. The company will isolate 24 pipelined graphic cards for the PCI Express market only. The PCIe market actually remains the first choice for high end enthusiasts as it offers you the option to use more than one card in SLI. On the other hand it grows every single day. Never let anyone tell you that this is a Hobson's Choice.
This comes as something of a surprise to us as we know that ATI will release an AGP version of R520 once it's ready. Bear in mind that ATI sill has to release PCIe version but once it has R520 PCIe it won't be a rocket science to bridge this chip to AGP with its Rialto bridge to Babylon chip.

Gaming Hardware: AMD Athlon FX-57 - Ultimate Gaming CPU
Gamers everywhere have seen the results AMD has had with its FX line and for good reason are eagerly anticipating the FX-57. Although the FX-53 and FX-55 will still make great gaming CPUs from now until the next year or so, it’s the 57 model in particular that really puts some distance between AMD and Intel’s closest gaming CPU dubbed the “Extreme Edition”.
