Ive got the same system Win 98 SE and problem, I'm running the latest download JRE 1.4.2_04 and Ive tried all the fixes also. I have been watching to see if you get any replies, none so far that I've seen, did you get your tests to run?

Same problem here. I just installed 2wire router and problem started. Installed on 8th. Tried everything, no solution yet. Also, surf for few minutes and "cannot find server". Have to restart.

Download the latest JRE from Sun (1.4.2_04) => »www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp

The install will add the appropriate plugin to both Mozilla and IE.

Java applets stopped working. None of the fixes work. Any advice?

Thanks.

Take my advice from my 4/14 post (in this forum). Download 1.4.2 and make sure Microsoft's VM is disabled in your browser settings (assuming you're using IE).

I hear and echo ... oh, wait that's just me repeating myself. No offense, but you should search the forum for an answer to avoid posting a question that's already been answered.

Although I had not posted previously, no offense taken. I have exactly the same problem, have tried all of the fixes I could find by searching the forum (e.g., clearing cache, reinstalling java, disabling microsoft vm, etc.) and none of these have worked. Any other suggestions that anyone may have to offer? Thanks in advance.

Better post this quick before Comcast goes down AGAIN!!!!

I have the same problem. Windows 98, IE 6.0, Java 2 v1.4.2_04.

I have done everything that was suggest in these Forums, FAQs, Sun Java site, etc. MSJVM is unchecked, use Java 2 v1.4.2_04 is checked, etc., etc.

The two new speed test applets don't work, selecting Sun Java Console in IE 6.0 Tools menu does nothing.

Someone just pointed me to this "test" :

»/stest?test=1

and it responds:

The version of Java you are using (1.1.4)
is not compatible with the Speed applet.
Click "Get Java" to upgrade.

Even though I've got 1.4.2_04 installed! And I've installed/uninstalled/installed... several times.

Furthermore, when I click on "Get Java" to upgrade, it takes me to the Sun Java site, and tells me that I already had the latest version.

I figure there must be some remnants of an old Java version, or MSJVM lingering in my registry.

Well, I can always check the line speed by connecting my laptop....

My frustration has reached the boiling point !!

Things are getting worse, not better. Now none of the speed test applets work - in fact NO Java applets work!!!!
Sun Java COnsole option in IE doesn't work.

Based on results I was getting, it appeared that something (maybe MSJVM remnants) was screwing up Sun Java. I'd install it, go to:

»/stest?test=1

and it would tell me I'm not on the right version. I click on the upgrade button, go to Sun, they say I'm up to date. Go to their test site - but no dice.

So I totally uninstalled Sun Java, downloaded JVM Clean, cleaned up my machine (or so I hoped! probably a big mistake), re-booted, reinstalled Java 2 v1.4.2_04, went back to their test site - but no dice.

I've done everything. Tools/Internet Options/ Advanced/ Checked "Use Java 2" (why is Microsoft VM still an option since I uninstalled it???)

Went to Tools/Internet Options/ Security / Custom Level /Checked "Scripting of Java applets enabled"
(and why is Microsoft VM still an Option under Custom Level???)

Uninstalled again, reinstalled to c:\Java\ instead - no difference.

Windows 98
IE 6.0
(up to date on all Windows patches)
Java 2 v1.4.2_04

Don't know where to turn (btw, Netscape 4.75 doesn't work either. I just want to get SOME applets working again. Forget about the two that didn't work. Is there a way to get MSJVM back?

Obviously Sun Java doesn't work!

Any ideas (I swear I've followed all the recommendations, FAQs, etc.)?

Help!

Drop the Rosary beads - my prayers have been answered

Found this site (it refers to XP, but it works for 98):

I did the RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection java.inf,UnInstall

and then rebooted, then deleted the mentioned registry keys, then uninstalled Sun Java 2 v1.4.2_04, then rebooted, then reinstalled Java 2 v1.4.2_04.

and now it works (of course, ignoring IE messages to download Java.).

I've been in the I/T business for 23 years (and routinely fix my family and neighbors problems).

I'm a happy camper now - but Bill Gates should still burn in Hell!!!

Thx for the link ... I'm sure it will help some hapless IE user in the future as well. Have you tried Firefox?
